Patterns, woods, and hoods

I can approach a painting with one of two primary mindsets, and this beginning approach often dictates how the rest of the painting will go. First in what I describe as kentically, observing each value formation infront of me, and responding with a paint mixture then brush stroke. Perhaps premixing a few colors but really diving right into the work. This could be described as a process in its own right.

Second, I carefully mix each color, carefully sketch out a composition, and carefully lay in patters which I predict will best represent the form infront of me. Patters seem to work most strongly to support form, feeling, and flow, and through this woods Seriers, I’ve become increasingly Intreeted in the importance of patterns for my work. And how their usage strengthens my work. Something which I theorized years back but have been unable to put this theory into action until recently, due to my lack of abilities back then. .. with this approach, I feel better about what I am doing, less out of controle, and more in controle of the outcome of my work. And it simply feels better to paint this way. And because of this, I am following this good feeling. Exploring it, and applying it to this important Woods Seriers. From which I plan to not only produce valuable works, but also gain insights and improved abilities as a painter.

With deeper concentration into my process, has also come deeper awareness of the effects of each pallet that I choose to use. Currently I am using a simpler pallet, at least relative to what I was using up until a month ago. This simpler pallet includes a transparent red, yellow, and blue, a white, plus two opaque colors, usually an opaque red or yellow or orange with an earth tone. Or simply anopaque red and opaque yellow. This ties back to allowing me controle over my process and outcomes. Something which brings me great pleasure. Perhaps I will expand on this pallet, or perhaps I will conclude that it fits me perfects. The same goes for the usage of patterns. It’s all part of the journey. Follow along. May 28th 2025.
